Guide to Repair a Leaking Roof: Causes & Options

Guide to Repair a Leaking Roof

From a homeowners’ point of view, a leaking roof is no less than a nightmare. It needs to be repaired in time to limit the damage that it can do to your home. This way, structural problems, mold growth and water damage are rapidly controlled.

What causes a leaking roof?

Cracks are often the culprit and frequently arise because of aging, poor installation or weather conditions. The roof’s improper slope might be the cause whereby the snow and rainwater do not directly flow to the gutters, resulting in leakage. Damaged flashing material placed around chimneys could result in leakages and so could damaged tiles. Replacing the damaged tiles might suffice but there are cases whereby the entire roof may need to be replaced.

It is noteworthy that when gutters are cleaned and inspected regularly and debris is removed, the odds of roof leaks taking place are reduced significantly. There are cases whereby poor ventilation results in roof leaks as it causes excessive moisture to accumulate in the roof. With excessive moisture, mildew grows, further reducing the roof’s strength. This may even cause roofing materials to corrode and rust. One of the best ways of going about the matter is to waterproof the surface.

The right way to stop water leakage

Waterproofing is the best way to prevent roof leaks. It helps to be alert before the rainy season begins. You may want to consult with some roofing & waterproofing specialists.

Repairing or installing asphalt shingles is one way to prevent roof leakages. While being a popular repairing material, asphalt shingles are durable and relatively affordable. If you come across any curled shingles on your roof, you should replace or re-attach them. Similarly, cracks should be repaired using a roof sealant or a high quality, durable and easy to install repair tape such as AdhesionXtreme’s® RoofBond® Waterproofing Tape.

Polymer membranes such as PVC & EPDM supplied in roll form are another alternative for waterproofing the roof. These polymer membranes are typically supplied in 10 meter wide rolls and are rolled out side by side and heat welded at the joints by a professional roofer or welder. On flat or slightly sloping roofs, AdhesionXtreme’s® RoofBond® UV resistant Waterproofing Tapes are an excellent option to seal these joints between the rolls of PVC or EPDM either as an alternative or an enhancement to the heat weld. It is recommended that you consult with a professional roofer prior to choosing the right solution for you.

Then of course there’s the option of asphalt supplied in large rolls and that are relatively easy to install. And just like the polymer rolls, the joints of these asphalt rolls are heat welded together using a blow torch in order to melt the asphalt and thus form a waterproof joint that prevents leakage at the joints. But there is a high level of danger of causing a fire when using a flame welding technique on an asphalt based material. So it is mandatory to have a professional roofer undertake this process. Before installing polymer based membranes such as PVC & EPDM or asphalt rolls, all cracks and fissures should be sealed with a sufficient amount of roofing cement, or even better, cleaner & quicker, Addhésion® Fleece Waterproofing Tape, which is a fleece backed tape designed for these purposes and supplied by AdhesionXtreme®.

Conclusion:

If not addressed in time, a leaking roof could do serious damage to your property. When you identify the underlying causes of roof damage, preventing leaks becomes not only possible, but imperative. These are just a few waterproofing tips provided by AdhesionXtreme® that can enhance your roofs integrity and longevity.
